Roosevelt writes Robinson of expenses incurred by the naturalists from the Smithsonian, Edgar A. Mearns, John Alden Loring, and Edmund Heller, working on the Smithsonian African Expedition of 1909-1910. Roosevelt notes the staff were "in sore straits for funds.

Corinne “Conie” Roosevelt Robinson (1861-1933) was the fourth child of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., and Martha Bulloch Roosevelt. Corinne was educated by private tutors, including her Aunt Anna Bulloch who lived with the family until 1866.
Knowing he was in a precarious financial position, Roosevelt gave Robinson a job with the U.S. Customs Department. I find this sinecure interesting and symbolic — Hawthorne and Melville had also worked for Customs.
