The Convention covers many of the principles contained within the United Nations Declaration and almost every Article is qualified to some extent. Its ratification is a prerequisite for joining the Organisation. The European Convention on Human Rights has played an important role in the development and awareness of human rights in Europe. The development of a regional system of human rights protections operating across Europe can be seen as a direct response to twin concerns. All 47 Council of Europe member countries have signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), a treaty designed to protect people’s human rights and basic freedoms.
